Climate

Ch. 5 Climate (p.67-79) -

Climate is the long-term trends in these atmospheric conditions measured over decades, centuries, or longer. When we say, “The cherry trees are blooming three weeks earlier than they did when I was a child, ” we are talking about climate.

I was today years old when I learned that climate is not weather. Now that I have a better understanding, an example of climate change would be the Venice canals in Italy are now clear after years of looking murky due to the pandemic as human impact has decreased. I have mentioned this in another blog, but it truly is a perfect illustration of the negative effect we are making on the planet. I almost always mention how simple it is to do our part to be the change we want to see but I understand why most people will not stick to a sustainable routine. I have a consistent skincare routine and to reach my skin goals I have to stick to it every day for maximum results but sometimes I fall asleep without doing it and it then becomes a habit where it is no longer consistent. My point is we get unmotivated because there is no significant difference if we occasionally skip a daily habit until it becomes an inconsistent pattern. We must see the world through a community perspective rather than a me perspective to keep our planet intact for many more years to come.

The important goal is reducing emissions. Any enterprise can still reduce its emissions without having a complete greenhouse gas inventory.
The ways we can reduce greenhouse emissions:

  • reduce, reuse, and recycle - ensure product packaging is recyclable.
  • use less heat and air conditioning - turn down heat and keep temperatures moderate.
  • replace your light bulbs - upgrade regular light bulbs with compact florescent light bulbs.
  • drive less - less emission and gas.
  • buy energy-efficient products - variety of energy-efficient models to choose from.
  • use less hot water - wash clothes in warm or cold water and buy low-flow shower heads.
  • turn off your switch - turn off when not in use and running water.
  • eat a plant-based diet - implement vegan or vegetarian alternative foods into your diet.

Climate Change

I chose to discuss how climate change has transformed the Arctic in the past 15 years. Climate change has negatively impacted the Arctic in a short period of time. Temperatures are fluctuating like never seen before. The sea ice is at its second lowest. The Arctic has been reported to be warmer and less frozen as it is changing faster than expected. Research techniques are able to pinpoint how different aspects are interrelated. The good news is the appearance of bowhead whales as the population was almost to extinction but are still at a vulnerable state of existence.
